THE OVERVIEW OF HILL TRIBE GROUPS IN YUNNAN
Yunnan is known as the "Kingdom of Ethnic Minorities" with ethnic minorities comprising over one third of the province's total population. There are 26 different nationalities are found in the province, each with a population of over 4000: Han, Yi, Bai, Hani, Dai, Zhuang, Miao, Lishu, Hui, Lagu, Wa, Naxi, Yao, Jingbo, Tibetan, Bulang, Bui, Pumi, Achang, Nu, Jinuo, De'ang, Mongolian, Shui, Man and Dulong. Fifteen of these nationality are ethnic minorities which exist only in Yunnan Province.
Ethnic minorities such as Tibetan, Naxi, Pumi, Lishu, Nu and Dulong live primarily in the northwestern region. The Dai, Jingbo, Achang, De'ang, Bai and Yi residet in western border areas. The Wa, Lagu, and Bulang dwell in the southwest, while the southeastern is inhabited mainly by nationalities of Zhuang, Miao and Yao.
During the course of history, ethnic minorities in the province and people from inland areas migrated and intermarried. The result was that one region was often inhabited by a number of nationalities. In Yunnan, each nationality maintains close contact with each other in terms of economy, culture and social activities. On the other hand, each nationality retains its own language and culture in such aspects as production, food, residence, dress and personal adornment, rituals, holidays, religions, weddings and burials. Among the numerous festivals, the most fascinating are the Water-Sprinkling festival among the Dai, the Climbing-Flower-Mountain Festival of the Miao, the Munao Mass Song and Dance Festival of the Jingbo, March Festival among the Bai, the July Festival of the Naxi and the Torch Festival of the Yi.
Since the founding of New China, the State has implemented policies geared towards treating all nationalities as equals, national unity, common prosperity and regional autonomy for ethnic minorities. Yunnan province has set up eight ethnic minority autonomous regions and 27 autonomous counties.
