JINGZHEN OCTAGONAL PAGODA IN DAMENGLONG TOWNSHIP |

Seated elegantly on the hill behind Menlong Township, 70 km from Jinghong city, is Menglong White Pagoda. It's close relative, the Black Pagoda, is located on a small hill west of Damenglong Township, 73 km from Jinghong.¡¡
Constructed in 1203, the White Pagoda is formed to resemble a bamboo shoot. A clay-brick structure with a solid centre, it consists of a mother pagoda, several baby pagodas and six huge clay dragons. The White Pagoda is famous both at home and in southeast Asian countries as the site of a Buddhist holy relic; half of a footprint, 80 cm long and 58 cm wide, which is said to have been left by Sakyamuni, the founder of the Buddhist religion. The White Pagoda is listed as a major cultural relic, and isunderStateprotection. The Black Pagoda was constructed in 1204. It is calabash-shaped and 6-sided, 18 meters and 7 stories high. Eight colored clay dragons embrace the structure. The Black Pagoda was black in colour when built, but in the past 800 years it has been painted several times; at present it is silvery white. The Black Pagoda is also famous for a footprint, this one 160 cm long and 60 cm wide, and said to have been left by deity Pazhao Getama.
